Investing in attorney wellness makes financial sense. Why? 1. Burned out attorneys are less engaged and less productive. In 2022 Gallup estimated that employees who aren't engaged at work cost the U.S. economy nearly $50B....B!!!!!2. Burned out attorneys are more likely to quit, and turnover is expensive. SHRM estimates that the total cost to hire a new employee can be 3-4x the position's salary. 3. Good luck recruiting if you have a reputation for overworking and burning out your team. For example, a 2023 MLA survey indicated that only 20% of aspiring Gen Z attorneys desire to work at a BigLaw firm (down from 59% in 2020). Why? They don't want to be treated like a disposable plate. Gen Z lawyers are acutely aware of mental health and are seekingmanageable work-life balances to preserve their emotional and physical fitness. They WILL make employment decisions based on a perceived impact to their wellbeing. Addressing burnout is about protecting the best interests of the company, and leadersship is the first line of defense. It starts with treating lawyers like humans, not machines. Its not rocket science, but it can be challenging to do if you don't know what to look for or how to respond. That's why I created this brief guide for team leaders to help them combat burnout. I'm excited to share that my guide was recently published with the Michigan State Bar, Practicing Wellness Journal! Check it out....

Yesterday's opening day of the Michigan Central Station was nothing short of spectacular! It was an amazing way to usher in a new era for what has been the poster-child eye sore of the city for so long! There was such good energy in the air as so many Detroiters came out to celebrate this exhibition of our renaissance city. There were so many high points of the evening, but here are a few that I have to highlight: 5. #teamjacob....#IYKYK lol - don't judge me. It was an era. 4. The dance party/praise&worship session courtesy of The Clark Sisters...forgot I know all the words lol. Sounds like my childhood and #theystillgotit 3. Participating in MePlusYouDetroit, by Suchi Reddy, an interactive art installation that uses AI to visually represent participants visions for the future through color and light..."My future looks limitless" (meplusyoudetroit.com)2. Seeing Diana Ross LIVE in concert....TWICE in once night! #dreamscometrue1. Supporting my husband, Nathaniel L. Wallace, in this game-changing opportunity he's had to make his mark on our city in such a major way. I'm so proud of the way you've approached this #legacy project and how you center Detroiters in all that you do :) Congratulations to the entire Michigan Central team! This is just the beginning of an epic journey to unfold. WE OUT HERE LOOKING GOOD DETROIT!!!!

Last week, May 6-10, was Well-Being in Law Week, an initiative championed by the Institute for Well-Being in Law (IWIL). Each day, IWIL provided free programing for individuals and organizations to cultivate more wellbeing in the legal profession. ICYMI, here's my top take-aways. Enjoy!

A bittersweet announcement: Friday was my last day at the Rock family of companies. I can’t help but reflect onmy incredible journey at the FOC.I deeply appreciate Dan and Jennifer Gilbert for the opportunity to work in their for-more-than-profit family office and support so many of their businesses. When I joined Rock almost 7 years ago I had no idea what was in store and how my role would evolve. I learned so much by being point on all legal needs for the companies I supported: formation, governance, financing, trademarks, acquisitions, divestments, investments, joint ventures, liquor licenses, leases, executive comp, regulatory compliance, reorganizations and more - I've honed my skills as a corporate generalist. I had a lot of fun working with great people on really cool projects that move Detroit forward. It’s been exciting to watch my work come alive and make a real difference in my community. I will miss a lot as I close this chapter, but it’s prepared me well for what’s to come (more on that soon). I’m wishing the teams at Rock, Bedrock, Detroit Venture Partners, Rock Events, Rock Security, Rocket Community Fund, Gilbert Family Foundation, Supper, Woodward Original, and the entire FOC the very best.

Today, International Be Kind to Lawyers Day, is all about showing the lawyers in our lives the love and respect they deserve. I work with an amazing team of in-house and outside counsel who are excellent at their craft - team work makes the dream work! I'll also happily take my flowers today... 😜 Thanks Amy Guzman for the reminder :)
